Gall - A
chief of the Hunkpapa Teton Sioux, who led a division of Sioux in the battle
of Little Big Horn when General Custer and all his men were slain.
Gall was born in South Dakota in 1840. Recognized by his people as
a brave warrior, he became a leader while still a young man. He fought
beside Sitting Bull as his lieutenant, fled to Canada with him, and later
surrendered. He settled down as a farmer on the Standing Rock Reservation
in the Dakotas. He became a friend of the whites and turned against
his old chief, claiming that Sitting Bull was a coward and a fraud.
