Bell
- A hollow instrument of metal or other material which gives forth a pleasing
sound when struck. Indians, especially the Pueblos, were familiar
with bells before the time of Columbus. The Indian metallic bell
is believed to have evolved from the rattle made of shells or molded clay.
Copper bells with stone tinklers have been dug up in Arizona and new mexico.
English colonists used copper and bronze bells in trading with the Indians.
Bells were especially popular in dance ceremonies, and Indians wore rows
of them strapped around their legs.
