Algonkin
- A small tribe which formerly lived where the present city of Ottawa,
Ontario, Canada, now stands. They early attached themselves to the
French but during the troubles with the Iroquois many were driven out of
their country. Some fled to Mackinac and into Michigan where they
consolidated and became known as the Ottawa. Their chief importance
is that they gave their name to the great Algonquian family.
