Tomahawk
- A term given to a weapon of war or a group of such weapons in use by
the early Algonquian tribes of the eastern United States. The word
came from tommahick, tomahack, tamahake, or tamahaac
of Virginian dialects.
The tomahawk is usually thought of as a
metal hatchet shaped weapon, often with a pipe bowl on the end opposite
the blade. In reality, such tomahawks were of European manufacture
and were traded to Indians throughout america. The earlier native
Indian tomahawks were in the form of war clubs, or hatchet shaped stones
lashed to handles of wood.
