Red Man
- A name first applied to the Beothuk Indians of newfoundland because they
colored their bodies, utensils, and weapons with red ocher.
Sebastian Cabot, the English navigator, on discovering Newfoundland, mentioned
"people painted with red ocher." Other writers later commented on
this and soon the name Beothuk was translated by the white man as "Red
indian," or "Red Man." The Beothuk actually were light brown in color.
