Mortar - Utensil of wood or stone used by Indians to grind grain, paint, or other substances.  The mortar was hollowed out and the grain which was placed in it was pounded with a rock or stick.  Plains Indians sometimes used mortars of rawhide in which to pound jerked meat for pemmican.
