Mohawk
- A powerful tribe of the iroquois, formerly occupying the territory of
the Mohawk Valley between Utica and Albany, New York. The Mohawk
were members of the Five Nations, the great Iroquois Confederacy, which
was founded by one of their chiefs, Hiawatha.
They were a warlike tribe and killed and
ate their captives, according to the Jesuit Relations. In
fact, their name was given by the Narraganset and meant "man eaters."
During the Revolutionary War they sided
with the British under the leadership of Joseph Brant.
