Kickapoo
- A tribe of Algonquian indians who formerly roamed what is now
the state of Wisconsin. They were allied with the Sauk and Fox from
early history, and in 1712 entered into a plot with the Fox to burn the
fort at Detroit. They joined with Tecumseh in the War of 1812, and
some of them fought under Black Hawk in 1832.
At one time a large group journeyed west
and became known as the Mexican Kickapoo. They were troublesome along
the border. The eastern band, which claimed the central portion of
Illinois, ceded this to the Government in 1819 and moved west. The
Kickapoo have given their name to a river in Wisconsin, creeks in Illinois
and Texas, and small places in these states and Kansas
