Caribou
- A large animal of the reindeer family, of a dull dun color in summer
and a smoky white in winter. It had large antlers and was found from
Maine to lake Superior. The caribou was an important food animal
for the northern Indians. The hide was used for clothing and robes,
and was also made into rawhide and, particularly, babiche. This type
was known as the woodlands caribou. A Barren Ground species was found
farther north in the Arctic regions.
