Band - Usually a term to denote a group of Indians smaller than a tribe. Many so called tribes were divided into clans, or groups of people descended from the same ancestors. Tribes often split into smaller groups, some of them composed of clans, while other groups from the same tribe would break off and follow a leader of their own choice. These were usually called bands.
