Appaloosa
- The white man's name for the war pony of the Nez Percé Indians.
The name came from the Palouse Valley of the Palouse River in Washington
and Oregon, which was formerly inhabited by a portion of the Nez Percé.
The Appaloosa is a fine sturdy horse and beautifully marked with spots.
When the Nez Percé Indians were rounded up by Government troops
in 1877 and placed on reservations, some of the horses were killed and
others taken from the tribe. However, today stock breeders have succeeded
in continuing the line.
