American
Horse - A chief of the Oglala Sioux. As spokesman for
his tribe he signed the treaty in 1887 by which the Sioux reservation in
Dakota Territory was reduced by half. Almost half of his tribe objected,
and excited by the news of the killing of Sitting Bull, supposed leader
of the Ghost Dance uprising, they withdrew from the council and prepared
to fight the Government. American Horse finally persuaded them to
submit to the terms of the treaty. In 1891 he headed a delegation
from the Pine Ridge Reservation to Washington and succeeded in obtaining
living rations and better treatment for his people.
