American - A name the early colonists gave to the Indians from that of the country in which they lived. The English used this term to mean the original inhabitants of America and called the white men "colonists." Some time ago the Indian was referred to as the "vanishing American," a term which is not fitting today because Indians are increasing in numbers. Indians had no general name for themselves.
