Altar
- A term meaning in its broadest sense a place sacrifices where made or
offerings laid, or around which some other act of worship was performed.
Some Indian altars were of the simplest nature, being an excavation in
the earth, a pile of rocks, a fire, or perhaps merely a buffalo skull.
Others were more like the altars of civilized people. Some tribes
had altar shrines near springs, rivers, caves, rocks, or certain trees.
The term altar was also applied to the pipe bowl of the calumet.
