Potomac - The name of an Indian tribe and an Indian town on what is now the Potomac River.  Explorers of the river, on being told the name of the town, mistook it for the name of the river.  The Potomac tribe of the Powhatan Confederacy formerly occupied the south bank of the river in Stafford and King George counties in Virginia.
