Mountain Lion - A catlike animal of reddish tawny color, which lives in mountainous regions. Also known as cougar, painter, American panther, catamount, and puma. The skin of this animal was highly prized by Indians of many tribes for making quivers for their arrows. The Ute were fond of such skin as a kind of riding pad, which they threw loosely over the pony's back. |
