- A town in Randolph County, Illinois, at the mouth of the Kaskaskia River.
It is believed to be the oldest town in the Mississippi Valley, and was
founded in 1683 by the French under La Salle. Kaskaskia, which obtained
its name from the Kaskaskia Indians, was the capital of the Illinois Territory
until Illinois was admitted to the Union in 1818.
