Croatan - A people of mixed blood who are believed to be descendants of Raleigh's "lost colony of Croatan."  They live in North Carolina, mainly in Robeson County.  For many years after the Civiil War they were classed as free negroes, but refused to send their children to Negro schools.  About 100 years ago they were legally given the name Croatan Indians.

In South Carolina are found a people believed to be of similar origin.  They were originally called "Red Bones."  Others in Tennessee are termed "Melungeons," and some in Delaware are called "Moors."
