Coronado, Francisco Vasquez De - A Spaniard who first explored the southwestern part of the United States.  He set out in 1540 to find the famed "Seven Cities of Cibola," which are believed now to have been the Zuñi pueblos in New Mexico.  He expected to find much gold and wealth.  With a part of his force he found and conquered the "Seven Cities," but did not find the supposed wealth.

In search of another wealthy Indian settlement, told of by an Indian guide, "The Turk," his army wandered as far as Kansas.  The route followed by Coronado and his men is thought to have been followed later by the famed Santa Fé Trail when it was established.  Coronado was the first to meet and report on many of the Pueblo tribes.
