Brave - A term applied to an Indian warrior, undoubtedly first used by the early Spanish.  Bravo means savage, wild, fierce, and in the strict sense is applied only to animals, but the term Indios bravos is found in early Spanish writings.  An indian spoke of having a "brave time" when he overcame great dangers and hardships.  Thus Dull knife, the great Cheyenne Chief, journeying with his people eighteen days in a subzero climate and eating nothing but a few dried rosebuds and snow, spoke of having a "brave time."
