Black Hoof
- A principal chief of the Shawnee, born about 1740. his Indian name
was Catahecessa. He was one of the greatest chiefs of the
ferocious Shawnee throughout the period when they were the most dreaded
enemies of the colonists. He was at General Braddock's defeat in
1755 and took a prominent part in the desperate battle with the Virginia
militia at Point Pleasant in 1774. When Mad Anthony Wayne broke the
power of the Indian Confederation and peace was signed in 1795, Black
Hoof's fighting days came to an end. From that time on he was a friend
of the Americans and as head chief of the Shawnee kept the majority of
his tribe from joining Tecumseh and the British in the War of 1812.
He died at Wapakoneta, Ohio, in 1831.
