Biloxi
- A small tribe of the Siouan language family, formerly living in what
is now the lower part of mississippi. They spoke an entirely different
language from any of their neighbors. They are noted as the tribe
that met the expedition to Louisiana to establish the first French colony.
They furnished the names for the first two capitals of Louisiana,
Old and new Biloxi; that of the present Biloxi,, Mississippi; and Biloxi
Bay. A few still live in Rapides Parish, louisiana, and there are
said to be some with the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma, but the tribe is practically
extinct.
