Babiche - A thong or string cut from eelskin, deerskin, or caribou hide.  After softening it was used as string or lacing, or woven into nets and bags.  Babiche was made into skeins and carried by Indians and northern trappers to be used for many purposes where string or cord was necessary.  The word is believed to have come from the Micmac Indian word ababich, meaning cord or thread.  Some tribes of the Athapascan family were known as the "Babiche People."
