Adze - A cutting, scraping, and gouging tool used by Indians.  Early adzes had blades of stone, shell, bone, and sometimes copper.  Later the Indians learned from the white man to use iron.  The adze was most frequently employed in hollowing out or shaping wood after it had been charred by fire.
